The U.S. Navy will commission in 2026 the USS IDAHO SSN 799, a Virginia-class, fast-attack, nuclear-powered submarine. In doing so, it will continue to honor Idaho’s extensive naval contribution that includes:
- Sun Valley was a Navy town from 1943 to 1946 when the Challenger Inn (known now as the Sun Valley Lodge) housed 1,500 Navy personnel who treated more than 6,500 war-injured Sailors and Marines. U.S. Navy Convalescent Hospital (1943-1946) Sun Valley, Ketchum, Idaho
- Idaho is the birthplace of Naval Nuclear Propulsion with the development and construction of the first submarine and first aircraft carrier nuclear propulsion plants.
