Idaho Public Television reporter Aaron Kunz is producing a documentary on the development -- and retirement -- of three nuclear propulsion prototypes A1W, S1W, and S5G that were developed for submarines at the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF). Click here to watch the preview.
Since the early 1950s, the NRF has been supporting the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) through testing, examination, and spent fuel management. The program trained nearly 40,000 Navy personnel to operate nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers from the early 1950s to the mid-1990s. The only remaining active facility at NRF is the Expended Core Facility / Dry Storage Facility, which provides for storage of spent fuel from U.S. Naval reactors. Idaho Public Television will tell the story of the NRF on Idaho Experience on December 3, 2023. The documentary will premiere in Idaho Falls at the Colonial Theater from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on November 30, 2023.
Idaho Public Television is producing a documentary on the USS IDAHO and Idaho's contributions to the U.S. Navy which will air at a later date. Reporter Aaron Kunz and videographer Tammy Scardino traveled to North Idaho in September to interview the USS IDAHO crew and Commissioning Committee members.
