Sep. 24—Six sailors from the USS Idaho left their nuclear-powered fast attack submarine in Connecticut and boarded a jet boat bound for Hells Canyon this week during a jam-packed trip to the Gem State.

KELLOGG — "Let it be forever!" rang out through the gymnasium at Kellogg High School on Tuesday morning. The crew of the USS Idaho led students, staff and community members in their vessel's battle cry during a visit to the Silver Valley. Former Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne and students from the Kellogg JROTC program engaged with crew members as they discussed the future of the nuclear-powered fast attack submarine.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — The USS Idaho, a modern nuclear submarine still under construction, is set to take to the seas in 2025. This week, members of the crew are touring the vessel's namesake. Specifically, they're visiting destinations across the Idaho panhandle. Petty Office Rober Boscan is from Hayden and fancies himself fortunate to be assigned to the submarine that shares his home state's name.

LEWISTON - The USS Idaho Commissioning Committee will welcome a contingent of the first U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to the under-construction USS Idaho to the Gem State. One sailor, Petty Officer Robert Boscan, hails from Hayden. It is a core mission of the committee to familiarize the sailors with Idaho and to establish a bond between citizens and the sailors who will take the USS Idaho to sea. A press release says it is a crucial part of our nation’s military strategy.

LEWISTON, Idaho – A submarine named the USS Idaho SSN 799 is roughly six months from being christened in what would be the first time in over 100 years. Tomorrow night (09/20) at Lewiston's Veterans of Foreign Wars Sourdough Post 10,043, folks will have the opportunity to hear from the USS Idaho's commander, and crew members and learn about the ship.


USS Idaho sailors coming to Lewiston, Grangeville, Moscow

A contingent of Navy sailors assigned to the USS Idaho will be in Lewiston, Grangeville and Moscow this week to become more familiar with the Gem State and establish a bond between the crew of the attack submarine and Idaho residents. This is the first U.S. Navy vessel to be named after Idaho in more than 100 years. The USS Idaho, a Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, is under construction in Connecticut and on schedule to be christened in 2024 and commissioned into active U.S. Navy service in 2025. During the trip to Idaho, the submarine’s commissioning committee has planned a variety of activities for Commander Randall Leslie and five crew members, including Petty Officer Robert Boscan, of Hayden. From 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a reception hosted by the Lewiston VFW Sourdough Post and the USS Idaho Commissioning Foundation, is slated for the VFW Hall at 1104 Warner Ave. Another reception is planned from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Grangeville American Legion Post at the Idaho County Veterans Center, and on Saturday, the crew plans to attend the University of Idaho football game in Moscow. They will be introduced at halftime. A visit to the Nez Perce County Museum and a tour of Idaho’s Schweitzer Engineering Labs to see construction of the components of the submarine are also on the list of activities.

COEUR d’ALENE — For the first time in nearly 100 years, a naval vessel will bear the name Idaho. So it was only fitting that more than 100 people gathered Sunday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 889 in downtown Coeur d’Alene to welcome the crew of the USS Idaho SSN 799, a Virginia-class, nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine.

Former Governor Dirk Kempthorne and the veteran service organizations of Kootenai County gave the visiting crew of the USS IDAHO a warm welcome tonight in Coeur d'Alene. The crew will be in North Idaho for a week learning about what makes Idaho so important to the Navy and special to its citizens.
