USS Idaho sailors coming to Lewiston, Grangeville, Moscow
A contingent of Navy sailors assigned to the USS Idaho will be in Lewiston, Grangeville and Moscow this week to become more familiar with the Gem State and establish a bond between the crew of the attack submarine and Idaho residents. This is the first U.S. Navy vessel to be named after Idaho in more than 100 years. The USS Idaho, a Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, is under construction in Connecticut and on schedule to be christened in 2024 and commissioned into active U.S. Navy service in 2025. During the trip to Idaho, the submarine’s commissioning committee has planned a variety of activities for Commander Randall Leslie and five crew members, including Petty Officer Robert Boscan, of Hayden. From 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, a reception hosted by the Lewiston VFW Sourdough Post and the USS Idaho Commissioning Foundation, is slated for the VFW Hall at 1104 Warner Ave. Another reception is planned from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Grangeville American Legion Post at the Idaho County Veterans Center, and on Saturday, the crew plans to attend the University of Idaho football game in Moscow. They will be introduced at halftime. A visit to the Nez Perce County Museum and a tour of Idaho’s Schweitzer Engineering Labs to see construction of the components of the submarine are also on the list of activities.
USS IDAHO Crew Visits North Idaho
COEUR d’ALENE — For the first time in nearly 100 years, a naval vessel will bear the name Idaho. So it was only fitting that more than 100 people gathered Sunday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 889 in downtown Coeur d’Alene to welcome the crew of the USS Idaho SSN 799, a Virginia-class, nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine.
Former Governor Dirk Kempthorne and the veteran service organizations of Kootenai County gave the visiting crew of the USS IDAHO a warm welcome tonight in Coeur d'Alene. The crew will be in North Idaho for a week learning about what makes Idaho so important to the Navy and special to its citizens.
The USS IDAHO Commissioning Committee will again welcome a contingent of the first U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to the under-construction USS IDAHO to the Gem State. One sailor, Petty Officer Robert Boscan, hails from Hayden, ID. It is a core mission of our committee to familiarize the sailors with our state and to establish a bond between Idaho’s citizens and the sailors who will take the USS IDAHO to sea as a crucial part of our nation’s military strategy.

U.S. Navy Christens 6th Block IV Virginia-Class Submarine USS Iowa (SSN-797)
General Dynamics Electric Boat celebrated the christening of the Iowa (SSN 797), the newest Virginia-class fast-attack submarine on Saturday. The submarine’s sponsor, Mrs. Christie Vilsack, christened the boat by smashing a bottle of champagne over the bow. Vilsack is a native of Iowa and most recently served as education advisor to the chancellor of Colorado State College. Vilsack’s husband, Tom, served two terms as governor of Iowa and is currently President Biden’s secretary of agriculture, a position he also held during the Obama administration. The USS Iowa is the fourth U.S. Navy vessel and first submarine named in recognition of the state.
