Idaho Public Television to examine 'Idaho's Nuclear Navy'
This year marks the Naval Reactors program's 75th anniversary — Aug. 4 marked the actual birthday — which launched as a joint Department of Navy and Department of Energy organization responsible for all aspects of the Navy’s nuclear propulsion. The history of Idaho's Nuclear Navy at the Department of Energy's desert site west of Idaho Falls dates to the program's inception.
Idaho Public Television reporter Aaron Kunz is producing a documentary on the development -- and retirement -- of three nuclear propulsion prototypes A1W, S1W, and S5G that were developed for submarines at the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF). Click here to watch the preview.

This story originally appeared in the Tribune on Aug. 20, 1946, advancing a parade in Lewiston. The USS Idaho battleship mentioned was put into service in 1919, went on to serve during World War II, and was present at Tokyo Bay when Japan formally surrendered Sept. 2, 1945. The next Navy ship to carry the name Idaho will be a submarine that is scheduled to be put into service in 2025. Navy sailors who are scheduled to serve on the submarine visited the area this past week.

USS IDAHO Crew Visits Kellogg High School
KELLOGG — "Let it be forever!" rang out through the gymnasium at Kellogg High School on Tuesday morning. The crew of the USS Idaho led students, staff and community members in their vessel's battle cry during a visit to the Silver Valley. Former Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne and students from the Kellogg JROTC program engaged with crew members as they discussed the future of the nuclear-powered fast attack submarine.

USS Idaho crew tours vessel's namesake a year before christening
COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — The USS Idaho, a modern nuclear submarine still under construction, is set to take to the seas in 2025. This week, members of the crew are touring the vessel's namesake. Specifically, they're visiting destinations across the Idaho panhandle. Petty Office Rober Boscan is from Hayden and fancies himself fortunate to be assigned to the submarine that shares his home state's name.
