‘Driving force’: Former Idaho governor honored with name aboard nuclear submarine
Idaho Statesman - 1/14/26 - A U.S. Navy ship will be named for the state of Idaho for the first time in more than a century, and now it will also carry the name of a “driving force” in public office for the state, too. Former Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne has been given the rare distinction of having his name attached to a space aboard the newest U.S. submarine — specifically the engine room. The honor was recently granted by USS Idaho Navy Commander C.J. Guillerault as the nuclear-powered sub nears commissioning later this year.

BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) — The U.S. Navy has a powerful new addition. Its newest fast-attack submarine, the future USS Idaho, is officially in Navy hands. The sub was delivered yesterday, Dec. 15, by General Dynamics Electric Boat. It’s the second Virginia-class submarine delivered this year and marks the official handoff from the shipbuilder to the U.S. Navy.
General Dynamics Electric Boat delivered the Pre-Commissioning Unit Idaho (SSN-799) to the U.S. Navy on December 15, 2025, formally transferring the 26th Virginia-class submarine to Navy control. General Dynamics Electric Boat delivered the Pre-Commissioning Unit Idaho (SSN-799) to the U.S. Navy on December 15, 2025. The 26th Virginia-class submarine transitioned from shipbuilder custody to Navy control following acceptance trials at Naval Submarine Base New London. Commissioning of this Block IV unit is planned for spring 2026.
Submarine builder General Dynamics Electric Boat delivered a Virginia-class attack boat to the U.S. Navy on Monday, the service announced. The future USS Idaho (SSN-799) is the second attack boat the Navy has received this year, after taking USS Massachusetts (SSN-798) from HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding last month.
