Darrell Smith, executive officer of the future USS Idaho (SSN 799), gave Gem State hockey fans a taste of submarine life by leading them in his crew's call-and-response battle cry. "Let it be - forever" is the English translation of Idaho's Latin state motto, Esto Perpetua.
Caldwell High School alumna who died in Iraq honored at assembly with USS Idaho sailors
Carrie French — who walked the halls of Caldwell High School as a student and cheerleader — joined the National Guard in 2003 and graduated in 2004. French was killed in 2005 in Kirkuk, Iraq, when an explosive hit a vehicle she was in. She was 19. On Tuesday, French was honored at an assembly with USS Idaho sailors at Caldwell High School. The USS Idaho is under construction in Groton, Connecticut, and is scheduled to be commissioned into the U.S. Navy active duty in 2025.
